Ocean Futures
Creating An Ocean Literacy Platform
The ocean is changing faster than we can easily comprehend. Rising temperatures, shifting ecosystems, carbon cycles, and human activity are all connected, but the information describing them is scattered across scientific papers, datasets, maps, and reports. Ocean Futures was created to make those connections visible. The project began with a simple question: how do you make a complex ocean system understandable without reducing its complexity?

CHALLENGE
The ocean absorbs more than 90% of the excess heat from human activity and about a quarter of our carbon emissions, yet most people meet it through either alarming headlines or dense scientific reports. Founders, investors, educators and policymakers are being asked to make decisions about warming, shipping, fisheries and blue carbon without a clear, trustworthy place to start. Ocean Futures began with one question: how do you explain a system this large without flattening it, or frightening people into looking away?

RESEARCH
The project grew out of Ocean Futures Toolkit, a STEEP report started in 2023 at Big Dreams Studio, and was later shaped by climate coursework at Terra.do. It includes the fundamentals of ocean science and the forces shaping the blue economy based on hundreds of sources. Every dataset on the site is pulled from a public source: NOAA sea surface temperature back to the 1900s, 510 tide gauge stations for sea level, GLODAP for acidity and salinity, GBIF occurrence records for reefs, kelp, mangroves, marshes and tidal flats, IUCN status for at-risk species, and OpenStreetMap boundaries for marine protected areas.

DESIGN
The site is built around how different people want to learn. The Ocean Guide is a short course in two parts: the science of warming, carbon and solutions, and the economics of eight drivers and 40+ trends. Ocean Maps is an interactive explorer with a historical timeline, species and protected-area layers, and live ship positions. Insights holds long-form ideas, articles and explainers on seaweed, blue carbon, shipping and biodiversity - a collection that will grow with author contributions.
IMPACT
Ocean Futures gives people a single place to move from understanding to action: seeing how the ocean has changed, where emissions come from, which solutions are backed by evidence, and where the opportunities and risks are forming. It is built for people making real decisions, whether that is a founder scoping a blue-economy venture, a teacher building a lesson, or an investor or local government weighing climate risk. It also shows that a design-led, open-data approach can make complex science accessible without losing rigor.
