DfS1: Design Touchpoints
How Does Design Help Startups Grow Engagament?
A startup doesn’t have just one audience.
→ It has customers trying to understand the product.
→ Investors trying to find the opportunity.
→ A team trying to attract top talent.
→ A community trying to decide whether to care.
→ Media trying to find a story worth telling.
→ Industry trying to understand what the company changes.
That’s why I think design for startups is often misunderstood.
A logo or landing page is only one part of the system. The real challenge is creating a consistent way for the company to communicate well across all of these touch-points.
This is something I’ve learned working with deep-tech and early-stage companies: the more complex the technology, the more important clarity becomes.
At Natural Flux, we think about three connected layers:
→ Product: What value are you actually creating?
→ Website: How do you turn that value into action?
→ Brand: Why will people understand and remember that value?
The website is a critical piece because it sits at the intersection of the product and brand. It's often the first thing audiences see, and it needs to explain complex technology without dumbing it down, establish credibility without feeling corporate, and give different audiences a reason to keep going.
And importantly, this isn’t only about aesthetics. Good design can help a startup in many ways:
→ Communicate its value faster
→ Build trust with potential customers and investors
→ Attract better talent
→ Make complex products easier to understand
→ Create consistency as the company grows
That’s the thinking behind Natural Flux Studio. We work with startups and scale-ups on brand strategy, websites and digital products: particularly in deep-tech, climate-tech and med-tech using research, strategic design and AI-assisted workflows to move from messy ideas to meaningful digital experiences.
I’m sharing more of the thinking behind how we approach design for startups here. Stay tuned!
